Remember Pearl Harbor

Remember Pearl Harbor, a day that lives in infamy. A good friend, Joe Hydrusko, was on a ship hear the Arizona and when the Arizona went down. Joe was a corpsman on a hospital ship and he dove in and saved over 20 men. Joe was never awarded the CMH, and he should have been. He was quite a character and sadly died in a plane accident over twenty years ago. He used to fly his Stinson Reliant around the statue of liberty on Pearl Harbor day and drop roses on it in remembrance of what happened and the people that lost their lives that day. It was something I have to admit seemed unreal to me until we had 9/11. God bless Joe, and the rest.
Thank you for reading this blog.

Memorial Day 2009

Today is a day of remembrance of those who lost their lives while in service to our country, particularly while in the military. As much as December 7 and September 11 have their own special place as historical dates, I think we need to remember those lost on those days as well, both civilian and military. Both were pusillanimous attacks on our country, but somehow in time have lost some of their importance in our history, particulary Pearl Harbor, but even only after 8 years, 9/11 is starting to fade. Today I honor Navy Coxswain Joe Hydrusko, who I knew personally. Joe was officially credited with rescuing approximately 300 sailors from the burning waters during the attack and the leading the efforts to cut 36 sailors from the burning hulk of the Oklahoma. Every December 7 he would fly his Stinson around the Statue of Liberty and drop roses (Many tried to get Joe the CMH, but it never happened). We miss you Joe.

For 9/11, I remember Pat Lyons, who as New York City Fireman courageously lost his life while trying to save others. Pat left a wife pregnant with their first child. Such stories abound of the people of the NYFD, NYPD and the PAPD. Also remember those on Flight 93, those on Flight 77 and those that worked in the Pentagon.
As usual, thank you for reading this blog.
